Installing an SSD on PlayStation 5
To successfully install an SSD on your PS5, you'll need a few supplies. Sony requires a very specific SSD. You'll need a PCle 4.0 M.2 SSD with a heatsink. All companies that make SSDs will have one advertised specifically for the PS5, making it much easier to find and purchase one. SSDs are available in a variety of storage capacities. You can add anything from 500GB to 4TB.
The other item required for installation is a Phillips (#1) screwdriver. The steps you'll need to complete the installation are straightforward, even for someone who's never installed an SSD before.
Step 1 – Remove the back cover of the PS5
It's important to take precautions. Before removing the cover, make sure all cables are disconnected from the device. This includes the HDMI and power cables. Place the console flat on a table, upside down, with the PS logo facing down. The back of the console should be facing up. Take precautions by first inspecting the surface to avoid scratches.
Accessing the SSD slot involves removing the back cover. Since the back is already facing you, lift the front-right corner up and then slide it toward the left side. This should successfully remove the panel.
Step 2 – Remove the PS5 expansion slot cover
When you remove the panel, you'll only see the fan and expansion slot cover near the top of the case. To make this easier, make sure the SSD slot is closest to you.
The cover is held in place with a single screw. Unscrew it and store it in a safe place. The screw has PlayStation symbols on it, so you can't miss it.
Step 3 – Work on the spacer and screw in the SSD housing
After removing the expansion slot, you need to remove the screw and spacer from the SSD housing. These are near the end of the housing.
Inside the SSD casing, you'll notice holes that correspond to different SSD card lengths. Take your SSD card and take a look to see where it's supposed to fit.
At this point, place the spacer over the SSD slot. It's secured with three points, meaning you don't have to worry about it staying in place or being perfectly aligned.
Step 4 – Insert the SSD and replace the mounting screw.
The SSD needs to slide properly into the connector and lock into place. You'll feel it when this happens. Take the previously removed mounting screw and replace it. Tighten the screw to ensure the SSD is securely in place.
Remove the expansion slot cover and replace it correctly using the included screw. Cover the PS5 as it was originally. Reconnect the cables you disconnected earlier.
Step 5 – Format the SSD
When you boot the console after successfully installing the SSD, you'll receive a notification to format your drive. This doesn't take long and should be completed within seconds after selecting “Format the drive.”
Formatting an SSD shouldn't be a problem if it's new and intended only for the PS5 console. However, if the SSD has been repurposed, it may contain important files. Before formatting the device, you should transfer the files to keep your data safe.
Once formatting is complete, games can be transferred between the new SSD and the internal drive. You'll have successfully expanded the storage space on your PlayStation.
