You can either use your iCloud account or use your existing Gmail or Outlook email address as your Apple ID. Don't worry. You can easily change your Apple ID to a different address later. Here's how.
Apple allows you to change the default email address for your Apple account. Here are some reasons why you might want to change it.
Why do you need to change your Apple email ID?
You can use your iCloud and later email ID, or you may want to change it to your primary email ID from Gmail or Outlook.
Also, have you ever checked out iCloud's web portal? It seems outdated compared to its competitors. Another reason could be that you've stopped using an iCloud ID and want all your Apple emails and purchase receipts from iCloud to go back to your account. Gmail or Outlook.
Change Apple email ID
Unfortunately, there's no way to change your Apple email address from your iPhone or iPad. You'll need to use your Apple account on the web to make changes. Follow the steps below to change your Apple email address.
Step 1: Visit your Apple account on the web.
Step 2: Sign in with your Apple account credentials.
Step 4: From your account page, click the Edit button on the right side.
Step 5: Click Change Apple ID from the following menu.
Step 6: Enter a new email address that you want to use as your Apple ID.
Step 7: Click Continue, and you're good to go with your new Apple email ID.
Step 8: If you changed your Apple ID to a third-party email address, check your email for a verification code, then enter the code.
Now that you've changed your Apple ID to a different email address, you need to make sure users can reach you on iMessage and FaceTime with your new Apple ID.
Make changes in iMessage
Apple offers multiple ways for anyone to reach you via iMessage, such as your mobile phone number and Apple ID. You'll need to make appropriate adjustments in the Settings menu to make your new Apple ID the default email address.
Step 1: Open the Settings app on the iPhone.
Step 2: Scroll down to Messages.
Step 3: Open the send and receive menu.
Step 4: iMessage will display your new Apple ID at the bottom.
Make sure the new Apple ID is selected from the You can receive iMessages to and reply from list.
From now on, anyone can reach you via your new Apple email ID in iMessage.
Make a change in FaceTime
Similar to iMessage, you'll also need to make changes to FaceTime. By default, FaceTime uses your mobile phone number to allow anyone to contact you on the platform.
Step 1: Open your iPhone Settings app.
Step 2: Scroll down to FaceTime.
Step 3: For some users, FaceTime may ask you to authenticate again.
Step 4: Sign in with your new Apple ID and password and you'll see them appear in the list.
Step 5: Create a new Apple ID and now anyone can FaceTime you with your new Apple ID.
You've successfully changed your Apple ID email address and made the required adjustments from the iMessage and FaceTime menus. There may be certain scenarios when you can't change your Apple ID email address from the web. Let's discuss them.
If you can't change your Apple ID
Under certain circumstances, Apple may not allow you to change your Apple ID email address.
- If you try to change your Apple ID to an @icloud.com email address created within the last 30 days, you'll be prompted to try again later. Basically, you need to wait 30 days and then try again.
- If your new Apple email address is already being used by other family members, Apple won't allow you to use the same email address with your account. You'll need to remove that email address from your family member's account and try again.
In some regions, you can use your phone number as your Apple ID. However, if your Apple ID already includes an email address, you can change it to a mobile phone number.
Change your Apple email ID
You can easily change your Apple ID to a different email address. Make changes from the web, and don't forget to make adjustments from iMessage and FaceTime, too.
