We now have periscope lenses with 10x zoom, microscopic lenses that magnify small objects, and portrait mode for clicking DSLR-like photos. While many phones come with many of these capabilities, the iPhone continues to excel when it comes to videography. The iPhone camera is one of the easiest to use for recording videos. Also, the Photos app on the iPhone packs basic video editing tools like cropping. Additionally, if you've shot in landscape orientation but think it would look better in portrait mode, you can consider rotating the video. It's not that difficult. Here's how to rotate videos on your iPhone.

Before we move on to how to rotate videos on an iPhone, it's important to discuss aspect ratios. If a video is recorded in portrait orientation, the aspect ratio will be 9:16. On the other hand, if a video is recorded in landscape orientation, the aspect ratio will be 16:9.
The reason this is important is that you can either rotate the entire video while changing the aspect ratio, or rotate the video content while maintaining the same aspect ratio. The first form of rotation—video rotation and aspect ratio—is more common. You can use it to upload your video to specific platforms that offer vertical videos, such as TikTok or Instagram Reels.
How to Rotate Videos on Your iPhone
This is where things get really complicated when rotating a video. Remember, you always have the option to undo any changes you've made. However, we hope you don't hit the "Done" button before that.
Rotate videos with aspect ratio
Rotating videos and changing the aspect ratio accordingly is simple and straightforward. You can do this directly from the Photos app on iOS. Here's how.
Step 1: Open Photos application On your iPhone, go to the video which you want to rotate.
Step 2: Click on Edit button In the lower right side.
Step 3: Locate crop symbol in the lower right corner.
Step 4: use Rotate button (square with arrow) In the upper left corner, rotate the video 90 degrees. Rotation occurs counterclockwise, so keep holding the button until you get the angle you want.
Step 5: You can also use face button In the upper left corner to reverse the video.
Step 6: After making all changes, click It was completed. Then iOS saves the video to Photos application.
The video we used in this example was originally shot in landscape orientation with a 9:16 aspect ratio. After rotating the video to portrait, the aspect ratio changed to 9:16. The clip can now be uploaded as a vertical video.
However, if you want to keep the video in landscape orientation but just rotate the contents, you will need to use the following method.
Rotate videos while maintaining the same aspect ratio
It's not possible to rotate videos while maintaining the same aspect ratio in the Photos app. Therefore, we'll need to enlist the help of iMovie. While it comes preloaded on your iPhone, you can reinstall it if you uninstall it.
Step 1: Open iMovie app on your iPhone.
Step 2: Locate Movie Option within Starting a new project.
Step 3: of Media List , Locate the video which you want to send.
Step 4: Choose Create movie option At the bottom.
The video will appear in iMovie app With a timeline by frame in the lower half.
Step 5: Click on timetable To select the video.
Step 6: Place two fingers on the screen where the video preview appears. Rotate your fingers in the direction you want to rotate the video.
Step 7: You will see Rotate icon Displayed when done. Release your fingers once you see it.
While this will rotate the video preview, it won't appear in the same aspect ratio as the original clip. Fortunately, you can change that.
Step 8: Locate small zoom lens In the upper right corner of the video preview to activate pinch to zoom.
Step 9: Pinch outwards to zoom in on the clip. Zoom in until the desired area is highlighted.
Step 10: Click on Done in the upper left corner.
Step 11: Click on Share icon At the bottom.
Step 12: Locate Save the video.
Wait for the video to be exported. When the process is complete, select OK In the wave.
Open Photos application and go to Saved videoYou will see that while rotating the video contents, the video is still in landscape orientation with an aspect ratio of 9:16.
